This number compares people with the same stage of kidney cancer to people without cancer 5 years after diagnosis. This system brings together information from the tnm stages and gives the cancer a number stage. The cancer has spread outside the kidney to nearby structures or lymph nodes.

Heart attacks strokes and many other medical conditions that are fairly common among older patients are more likely to be fatal than a kidney tumor that is in this early stage. If kidney cancer is described as stage 1 it means the tumor is still relatively small and hasn t yet spread past the kidney. The 5 year survival rate for all types of kidney cancer combined is 75. There is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the kidney.
